Perspectives of Resources on ‘Mathematics in Real World Contexts’ from the viewpoint of Gender(JSPS Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI) (JP18K02942)

Research Outline

In Japan, gender differences on achievement and attitude toward mathematics still exit, especially in the International studies such as PISA. However, the data with respect to gender differences have not been announced in the National Assessment of Academic Abilities in Japan.

The problem that Japanese girls and boys tend to think mathematics as having no relationship to real world contexts has also been pointed out for a long period of time.

Therefore, this research seeks approaches to promote student’s attitude and achievement toward mathematics by investigating the following topics:
- examine the trends of researches of mathematics education on gender after 2000 in abroad
- analyze mathematics textbooks from the viewpoint of gender equity
- produce resources on ‘Mathematics in Real World Contexts’ from many points of view
- study how to change the values on mathematics of girls and boys

Mathematics should be accessible and should be learned to be useful, to be related to society, and to promote higher-ordered thinking for girls and boys.
